Monday night I finished my second round of antibiotics. Tuesday I started coughing more (it never went away completely but had gotten a lot better). Then my chest started to hurt. I called the doctor's office and they prescribed a new antibiotic (aka Round III). That just didn't feel right so I called my sister-in-law, who is an internist, and talked to her about it. She thought I should avoid more antibiotics and try an inhaler. She said it might be a brochio-spasm type cough. So last night I didn't go pick up the antibiotics.

I accidentally bumped upon your page and saw the Zithromax antibiotics photo, and I was shocked! I read what you wrote and it sounded just exactly what I have been facing for the past weeks. I too took these antibiotics and my cough never went away. I was wondering if the inhaler worked and cured it for you. I have been carrying this crazy cough, cold, runny nose for months, and the doctor only prescribed me the same antibiotics and a liquid (don't know its name), which never actually worked completely. Could you please let me know what ended up saving you? I know its like 4 years ago, you probably don't remember... But at this point, I need to try everything I can, and am glad that I bumped onto your page. I will check back here from time to time to see if you would like to shed some light on me. Thank YOU !

Hi Kent. I don't know what I used specifically in this instance, but I have developed a tendency to have a prolonged cough every time I get really sick. They think it's a brochio-spastic cough (so not contagious) and/or a touch of asthma that only appears when I get sick. I've used the Advair inhalers a number of times when I've been sick, including again this winter. I can't say for sure whether it helps or shortens the duration of the cough, but it seems to, particularly if I start the inhaler as soon as the cough starts. Taking it easy also helps a lot.
Good luck. Make sure you confer with your doctor of course. My father-in-law had a prolonged cough after an illness this winter and ended up with a terrible ear infection because they just told him to wait it out. There's all different strains and problems.

Hi Corinne! First of all, thanks for the time writing up a reply, I appreciate it deeply. My doctor actually prescribed an inhaler for me, Proventil's Albuterol Sulfate. Don't know why, it did absolutely nothing on me. Did you need a prescription to get the Advair's?

Anyway, I am on my 6th round of medication treating the same problem, this time it seems its working. So it turns out I have a sinus infection, and a bad one at it. A couple of Allegra-D worked like magic, and I felt so much better just after a couple of them. There is also another liquid that's supposed to help me with the cough, it works but the downside of it is drowsiness, there is no way I can use this during the day when I need to get to work and stay working. I can only take it before bedtime, but still, it works.

So it was not a cold but sinus, and I was taking SO much of those off-the-shelves Tylenol and Nyquil for severe cold, no wonder they couldn't help ! ;)

Well, thanks again for replying and helping a total stranger with your valuable time! Good luck with raising your kids(they are cute), I am also a father of two. :)

Sincerely, Kent

Albuterol inhalers are for opening up the airways. Advair is a totally different kind of inhaler, used daily instead of as needed in the moment. It is by Rx only. If the cough you have doesn't subside with the allergy meds, ask your doctor about it. :-)
