Another fun centralization of powers
Radical Right members of Congress are trying to sneak through the REAL ID Act, legislation that would grant the Secretary of Homeland Security the power to waive "all laws" -- including environmental, civil rights and labor laws -- that he or she determines would interfere with the construction of barriers and roads along our nation's borders. These decisions could not be challenged in any court because the bill exempts such decisions from judicial review. House sponsors of the REAL ID Act have attached it to a "must-pass" bill, the Iraq war appropriations supplemental. This means that we need to get senators to remove the Act in conference committee, since senators are very unlikely to vote against the final version of the supplemental, no matter what it contains. Get more info and email your senators.
