I think the original design placing the eject button below the CD tray was an oversight. But I can see no reason why this design flaw persists in every CD and DVD drive to this day. Has no one noticed that it's difficult to reach the button when the tray is open? Just pushing on the tray to close it wears out the drive more quickly than using the button.
